Meta, formerly Facebook, presents its new virtual reality projects

As you may already know, Facebook rebranded last year to Meta. This change was based on the company’s desire to be part of the Metaverse. Indeed, its CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a great believer in the potential of this new virtual world, which he considers to be the future of social networks.

Last February, the company announced that it would invest $10 billion in research and development around virtual reality and augmented reality technologies (including VR headsets).

More recently, Meta has made its progress known by unveiling several prototype VR displays developed in its labs. These prototypes are, for the time being, built for research purposes only. The social media company is seeking to reach the full potential of the metaverse technology, which is seen as the future of business and human interaction.

These models are intended to deliver visual experiences that are almost “indistinguishable from reality”. The research is intended to solve certain issues such as poor resolution, distorted views and eye fatigue.

“We still have a long way to go in the displays and graphics stacks before we can get to visual realism. This is a much more complex problem than just displaying a realistic-looking image on a computer screen or a TV … we have solved some of these challenges already, and for others, there is still a lot of work to do.” explained Mark Zuckerberg.

The research team is developing a new range of products with ‘varifocal’ technology that ensures good focus and allows clear and comfortable vision for long time periods. They are also working on distortion correction and intend to achieve a resolution that approaches or exceeds human vision by 20/20 or 6/6 .

Meta currently dominates headset sales. But even if the VR market is still small, the question is how big it could get in the future.
